In response to increasing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the Pentagon has strategically deployed US military assets in the Mediterranean on Friday to prepare for potential evacuations of American citizens. The USS Wasp, along with Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, has joined other US naval forces in the region for this purpose, as reported by NBC News.
This repositioning aims to prevent further escalation in the region and support possible military-assisted departures. Despite pressure from the Biden administration, Israeli officials are determined to target Hezbollah in Lebanon and create a 10-mile buffer zone along the Lebanese border.
With an estimated 86,000 Americans residing in Lebanon, the US State Department is on alert, recalling the evacuation of 15,000 people during the 2006 conflict. The US Embassy in Beirut has advised Americans to reconsider travel to Lebanon due to the volatile security situation, while Canada is also developing plans to evacuate around 20,000 of its citizens.
