The USS Wasp has entered the eastern Mediterranean Sea this week to support efforts in preventing further escalation of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. While the ship has the capability to aid in civilian evacuations during a potential full-scale war, its primary purpose is deterrence, according to U.S. officials.
This deployment mirrors a previous move when the USS Bataan was sent to the region after Hamas’ attack on southern Israel in October. The rotation of the Wasp, along with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the USS Oak Hill, aims to provide options and help contain the conflict. The Mediterranean deployment also includes the USS New York, enhancing troop delivery capabilities.
Tensions between Hezbollah and Israel have been rising, with both sides engaging in cross-border strikes. The Israeli army has approved plans for a potential offensive in Lebanon, prompting concerns of an Iranian response in defense of Hezbollah. The U.S. military has also redirected ships in the region, with the USS Eisenhower returning home and the USS Theodore Roosevelt taking its place.
