US Slams Hungary’s Anti-Democratic Law
The US has criticized Hungary’s new sovereignty law, which bans foreign financing for parties or groups running for election, as anti-democratic. The law, passed in December 2023, carries a punishment of up to three years in prison and sets up an office to monitor risks of political interference.
The Sovereignty Protection Office launched an investigation into the Hungarian branch of Transparency International and an online investigative outlet, Atlatszo.hu. The US State Department expressed deep concern over the investigations, calling them “draconian actions” that go against democratic governance and the rule of law.
The law has faced criticism from the European Commission and a panel of constitutional law experts from the Council of Europe for potentially undermining democratic values and fundamental rights. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has denied accusations of undermining democracy, has been in power since 2010 with a two-thirds majority in parliament.
