Two major supermarkets, Tesco and Asda, are facing legal action after customers, including an 11-year-old girl’s family, fell seriously ill from eating own-brand sandwiches linked to an E coli outbreak. The outbreak has resulted in one confirmed death and over 120 hospitalizations in the UK, with concerns about lettuce being the likely source.
The UK Health Security Agency reported two deaths in England from Shiga toxin-producing E coli, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. One victim, the 11-year-old girl, suffered kidney damage and required hospitalization after consuming an Asda chicken salad sandwich.
Fieldfisher, a legal firm, is representing the affected families and has issued claims against both supermarkets for breaching consumer protection laws. E coli, a bacteria commonly found in the intestines, can cause severe illness, including diarrhea, stomach cramps, and potentially fatal conditions like HUS.
The number of confirmed E coli cases has risen to 275 in the UK, prompting health warnings and legal action against the supermarkets involved.
