This week, Armenia made headlines by unilaterally recognizing Palestinian statehood, marking the ninth country to do so in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Armenian Foreign Ministry cited the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a key factor in their decision.
The strained relationship between Armenia and Israel stems from Israel’s support for Azerbaijan during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Reports show that Israel was a major source of arms imports for Azerbaijan, leading to tensions between the two nations.
Armenia’s ambassador to Israel highlighted Azerbaijan’s use of Israeli weapons against civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite these issues, Israel has not formally recognized the Armenian Genocide, causing further strain on diplomatic ties.
With 34 countries recognizing the Armenian Genocide, including the US, Israeli lawmakers and activists are pushing for Israel to do the same. Recognition of the genocide is seen as a crucial step towards moral integrity on the international stage.
If Israel aims to be a voice of legitimacy and morality, acknowledging the Armenian Genocide is essential. It’s time to put aside political considerations and do what is morally right.
