On June 28, 1956, Poznań, Poland, witnessed the first general strike and street demonstrations in the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), known as the Poznań June. Workers and citizens protested against government oppression and poor working conditions, leading to a brutal crackdown by the military and police. Despite attempts to erase it from history, the event is now recognized as the Poznań revolt.
Remembering a Defining Moment
In 2006, the National Day of Remembrance for the Poznań June was established to commemorate the 50th anniversary. Five presidents attended the inaugural celebrations, emphasizing the international significance of the protest and honoring the spirit of resistance.
Honoring the Past
In 2016, the 60th anniversary was marked with a solemn ceremony in Poznań’s Jeżyce district. A memorial plaque featuring a bullet-riddled jacket and a poignant excerpt from Stanisław Hejmowski’s speech was unveiled, paying tribute to the sacrifices made during the historic uprising.
