Portugal invests €180.5M in Embraer A-29N aircraft.

Portugal Announces Upcoming Acquisition of Super Tucano A 29N Aircraft 001

Portugal has recently announced a €180.5 million investment in purchasing the Brazilian-made A-29N Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer. This decision is part of Portugal’s broader strategy to enhance its defense capabilities and strengthen military ties with Brazil.

The A-29N Super Tucano, known for its versatility and ruggedness, is selected for various missions such as advanced training, light attacks, and close air support. Its ability to operate from unpaved runways and harsh environments makes it ideal for diverse military needs.

The choice of the Super Tucano is influenced by Embraer’s established presence in Portugal, as its subsidiary, OGMA, will provide local support and maintenance, ensuring operational readiness. This partnership also involves other Portuguese companies, promoting local industry development.

This investment will replace the retired Alpha Jets, significantly enhancing the training capabilities of the Portuguese Air Force. The Defense Minister emphasized the importance of this deal during a parliamentary session, highlighting its impact on international peacekeeping missions in Africa.

Portugal’s strategic investment in the A-29N Super Tucano aligns with NATO requirements and enhances interoperability with other member forces. This purchase not only modernizes Portugal’s air force but also strengthens its role in regional and global security efforts.
