In Naha, the Okinawa Prefectural Government filed a protest with a senior U.S. Air Force officer regarding an alleged sexual assault by U.S. airman Brennon Washington. Washington, 25, is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a girl in December last year.

Vice Governor Takekuni Ikeda conveyed the seriousness of the incident to Brig. Gen. Nicholas Evans and emphasized that such actions violate human rights. Evans expressed concern and assured cooperation with the investigation but did not apologize.

Ikeda criticized the lack of education and management at U.S. bases in Okinawa and urged swift preventive measures, an apology, and compensation for the victim. Despite being granted bail, the suspect remains at Kadena base.

This incident highlights the need for improved oversight and accountability within U.S. military installations to ensure the safety and well-being of local residents. The Okinawa Prefectural Government’s firm stance against such crimes sets a precedent for addressing and preventing future misconduct.
