The Anambra Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has cracked down on illegal mining activities in the state by apprehending four suspects involved in the illegal act. The suspects were arrested in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area, under the supervision of NSCDC Commandant Olatunde Maku in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officers of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in Anambra.
The arrested individuals, namely Nnamani Chidubem, Ekemezie Ifeanyi, Okolie Patrick, and Onyedika Somtoo, were caught mining Laterite without the necessary approval, resulting in environmental degradation in the area. The authorities seized a truck-load of Laterite, heavy-duty batteries, a hydraulic jack, and fuel filters from the suspects.
This operation serves as a warning to illegal miners that their activities will no longer be tolerated, as it constitutes economic sabotage and poses significant environmental risks. NSCDC commends the efforts of the Solid Minerals Unit in combating illegal mining in the state.
In light of these events, Mr. Henry Bolarinwa of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development emphasized the importance of operating with valid licenses and in approved mining sites to prevent revenue leakages and environmental hazards associated with illegal mining.
