Cong

The UNMISS Deputy Special Representative-Political, Guang Cong, is optimistic about the Nairobi Peace Talks between the Government of South Sudan and non-signatory opposition groups mediated by Kenya. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and consensus-based decision-making for peace in South Sudan.

Cong praised the transitional government’s efforts to engage non-signatory groups under the Tumaini Initiative in Nairobi. He stressed the need for a working formula to ensure complementarity between the Tumaini initiative and interparty dialogue for a successful transition and elections.

UNMISS will provide technical support for the electoral process, including assisting the NEC and developing the electoral security plan. Cong highlighted the importance of a secure environment for safe elections and expressed concerns about the humanitarian and economic conditions in South Sudan.

He urged for more financial support for the Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan and emphasized that the Revitalized Peace Agreement is crucial for lasting peace in South Sudan.
