The Italian aircraft carrier Cavour is set to visit Japan in August and participate in military exercises with Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, strengthening political and defense ties between Rome and Tokyo. The deployment of the flagship of the Italian Navy, along with advanced F-35B stealth fighters, aims to enhance stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Convergence of interests

The G7 summit hosted by Italy in June played a crucial role in solidifying relations between Italy and Japan, with a focus on peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. As Italy distances from China’s Belt and Road Initiative, its alignment with the US and NATO allies grows stronger.

The joint development of weapons systems with Japan, Italy, and the UK signifies a new era of collaboration, marking a significant shift in Japan’s procurement history and Italy’s defense sector expansion.

Avoiding antagonizing China

While the deployment of Cavour serves as a symbolic gesture, it is unlikely to provoke China by avoiding disputed territories. The growing defense ties aim to lessen Japan’s dependence on the US, preparing for potential geopolitical shifts.

The deepening relationship between Italy and Japan opens new opportunities for both nations, fostering global alliances and ensuring regional security.
