Iranian Presidential Election 2024: A Snapshot
Excitement is in the air as Iranians head to the polls on Friday in a snap election following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of former President Ebrahim Raisi. More than 61 million eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots to choose the next leader.
The polls, which opened at 8 a.m. local time, will close at 6:00 p.m., with early projections expected by Saturday. A total of 340 polling stations have been set up in 100 countries to allow Iranian expatriates to participate.
Out of a pool of six candidates initially vetted by Iran’s Guardian Council, four remain in the race, including Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Saeed Jalili, Masoud Pezeshkian, and Mostafa Pourmohammadi. The eventual winner will serve a four-year term and carry the weight of leading the nation through critical times.
