In the ongoing negotiations for a government of national unity (GNU), Patriotic Alliance (PA) partner Gayton McKenzie believes that the Democratic Alliance (DA) pushed the African National Congress (ANC) too far with their demands, causing President Cyril Ramaphosa to reject some of the blue party’s requests.
Ramaphosa’s letter to DA leader John Steenhuisen criticized the party’s demands as legally incompetent, especially their interest in director-general posts. The DA wanted 12 ministerial positions, with Steenhuisen potentially taking on the role of deputy president from Paul Mashatile.
The president emphasized that negotiations were also taking place with other parties to join the GNU, highlighting the strained relationship between the ANC and the DA.
McKenzie expressed concern over the delays caused by the negotiations between the two major parties, hoping that a resolution would be reached soon with a cabinet announcement following shortly after.
The circus of negotiations seems to be coming to an end, with a potential agreement in sight for the GNU.
