European Union leaders signed a security agreement with Ukraine, emphasizing EU support for Kyiv in the face of Russian aggression. The deal includes commitments in security policy areas like arms deliveries and military training to help Ukraine defend itself.
In a summit that also discussed defense capabilities and EU priorities for the next five years, leaders highlighted the need for increased defense spending to counter rising military threats from Russia and China. The EU aims to invest 500 billion euros in defense over the next decade.
Additionally, there were calls for building a defense line along the EU’s border with Russia and Belarus to protect against external threats. The strategic agenda also focuses on enhancing EU competitiveness against economic pressures and preparing for potential enlargement to include Ukraine and other countries.
During the summit, leaders are expected to nominate Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as head of the European Commission, along with other key positions. While there may be resistance from some leaders, the majority consensus will likely prevail.
Overall, the summit underscored the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and strengthening its defense capabilities in the face of geopolitical challenges.
