EU leaders give green light to von der Leyen, Kallas, and Costa for top roles

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addresses a media conference during an EU summit in Brussels on October 27, 2023.

EU leaders reached a summit agreement to re-elect Ursula von der Leyen as the head of the European Commission and appoint Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the top diplomat for the EU.

The deal divides the bloc’s top institutional positions for the next five years, with former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa set to lead the European Council.

Despite opposition from the far right, including Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, all three nominees come from the centrist alliance that won the majority in the EU Parliament.

While von der Leyen faces challenges like the Russian threat and climate change, Costa and Kallas must secure majority support in the European Parliament.

The agreement reflects a balance between different political groups and ensures representation for influential countries like Italy.
