Israel’s alleged spying and harassment of International Criminal Court (ICC) officials has sparked outrage and action from the Netherlands. The Dutch foreign ministry has summoned Israel’s ambassador to explain the reported surveillance, intimidation, and interference with ICC staff over the past nine years.
The Netherlands, as the host country of the ICC, is responsible for ensuring the court’s independence and security. Dutch officials have demanded answers from Ambassador Modi Ephraim following an investigation by The Guardian, +972 Magazine, and Local Call.
Israeli threats, including from former Mossad chief Yossi Cohen, against ICC officials have raised concerns about the extent of interference in international justice. The ICC’s current chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has even requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
The tension between Israel, the US, and the ICC continues to escalate, with strong condemnations from the accused parties. The Netherlands’ actions highlight the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the independence of international institutions.
