The Executive Director of CEPO has called for the postponement of the December 2024 General Elections due to key provisions of the peace agreement not being met. During a meeting with senior mission leadership, concerns were raised about the unification of forces and the lack of a permanent constitution.
According to Edmund Yakani, elections are not a priority for South Sudan at the moment, with focus instead on implementing crucial aspects of the peace agreement. Lt. General Abraham Manyuat Peter emphasized the need to address the issue of too many high-ranking military officials for effective security arrangements.
Oyet Patrick highlighted the importance of having a permanent constitution before holding elections, as it defines the government. Despite pending issues, the NEC reassured citizens that the 2024 elections will proceed, contingent on political will.
UNMISS Deputy Head Guang Cong reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to facilitating dialogue among stakeholders to ensure free and fair elections, urging all parties to work together towards this common goal.
