Bolivian Minister: Govt warned of coup attempt.

334352

The Bolivian government was aware of potential coup plans before the failed attempt by the nation’s chief military officer and his forces to storm the presidential palace, a high-ranking minister disclosed on Thursday. The swift and ultimately unsuccessful coup raised concerns about the stability of democracy in the Andean nation.

President Luis Arce had received reports of “destabilization attempts” prior to the mobilization of military units, according to Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo. Despite the chaos at the palace, the soldiers eventually withdrew, and police regained control of the plaza with the president quickly appointing a new top general.

The former military commander and other officers involved in the coup attempt have been arrested and face potential lengthy prison terms. The coup plot was allegedly linked to ex-President Evo Morales, although conflicting accounts emerged regarding the motive behind the failed coup.
