Bolivian government officials have made further arrests in connection with the recent failed coup attempt against President Luis Arce, bringing the total number of detainees to 21.
Among those apprehended are military officers, including the driver of an armored vehicle that crashed into the government palace, putting the president’s life at risk.
The government alleges that the coup was orchestrated by a top general, Juan José Zúñiga, who claimed he was ordered by the president to carry out the mutiny in a bid to boost his popularity.
The political turmoil has left Bolivians questioning the truth, as tensions between Arce and former ally Evo Morales worsen the country’s economic crisis.
Arce has vehemently denied the accusations of a “self-coup” and promised that Zúñiga and others involved will face justice.
