Biden names Muslim leader as Director of Religious Freedom Commission

President Joe Biden has appointed Dr. Mohamed Elsanousi as a commissioner for the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).

Dr. Elsanousi, previously serving as the Interfaith and Government Relations Director at the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), is well-known for his work in promoting religious freedom.

In addition to his role at ISNA, he also serves as the executive director of the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers.

His impact on advocating for religious freedom is evident through his involvement in developing the Marrakech Declaration, which focuses on the rights of minorities in Muslim-majority countries.

Dr. Elsanousi has also played a key role in establishing standards for safeguarding the rights of religious minorities in Muslim-majority communities.

Moreover, he founded Faiths4Vaccines, an initiative aimed at promoting equitable vaccine distribution and combatting vaccine hesitancy.
