RIMPAC 2024: A Glimpse into the Future of Indo-Pacific Security
In Hawaii, the US Pacific Fleet is currently hosting Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), the world’s largest international maritime exercise involving 29 countries. The exercises aim to enhance multilateral relations and preparedness in the Indo-Pacific region amidst growing US-China tensions.
This year’s drills feature countries from around the world, including Israel, South Korea, Japan, and India. However, Israel’s participation has sparked protests due to its conflict in Gaza. The exercises involve combat and contingency training on land, at sea, and in the air.
Despite its focus on cooperation, RIMPAC faces criticism from environmental and Indigenous groups for its impact on the region’s ecosystems and cultural resources. The exercises also come at a time of heightened regional tensions, with the US reaffirming its security strategy in the Asia Pacific.
