Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, is calling for peace in the Middle East, emphasizing that the region, including Lebanon, does not need war. During a press conference in Beirut, Parolin urged warring parties to accept peace proposals to end the fighting and release hostages in Gaza, while ensuring aid reaches the Palestinian population.
Parolin’s plea comes amid Israel’s ongoing conflict with Gaza, resulting in a high death toll and continued violence despite calls for a ceasefire from US President Joe Biden. There are concerns of a wider regional escalation involving Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has also stressed the need to separate Lebanon’s stability from complex conflicts. Parolin, during his visit, expressed serious concern over Lebanon’s presidential vacuum and called for urgent action to elect a new head of state.
Lebanon has been without a president since October 2022, with political deadlock hindering the election process. Parolin’s visit aims to promote peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the importance of finding solutions to prevent further bloodshed and unrest.
