Teenage boy sentenced to one-year imprisonment for defiling a six-year-old girl in Raga County
A High Court Circuit, supported by UNMISS’ Rule of Law Department, is currently in Raja County trying a backlog of cases due to the lack of a resident judge. Wilson Cirilo Jada, the state’s legal advisor, highlighted the need for citizen sensitization to reduce rape cases in the area.
Several rape and defilement cases await trial in Raga County, with one involving a sixteen-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl. Despite efforts to prosecute perpetrators, the judge noted that jail terms alone have not reduced such crimes.
Following the ruling, the families of the victim and convict expressed mixed emotions. A relative of the convicted teenager mentioned plans to negotiate with the victim’s family and explore the possibility of an appeal.
With the gravity of the situation, the community must come together to address the issue of sexual violence. Family support and legal intervention are crucial in seeking justice for the victims and preventing future incidents.
