South Korea is facing a demographic crisis with the lowest birth rate globally. To tackle this issue, the Saha District in Busan is offering cash incentives for couples to date and get married.
The district government has allocated funds for a matchmaking program to encourage locals to start families, providing financial rewards at each stage. A pilot project is set for October with a meeting event for potential couples.
Couples who agree to date will receive 500,000 won each, while those who marry will get an extra 20 million won. Newlyweds can also receive funds for a home deposit or rent subsidy.
The program targets individuals aged 24 to 43 living or working in Saha, with plans to expand to include foreign nationals. This initiative aims to combat the population decline due to the plummeting birth rates in South Korea.
While unique, this incentivized approach complements existing government efforts to address the root causes of the low birth rate crisis in the country.
