The Government of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) recently received six former abductees from Jonglei State, with plans underway to reunite them with their families. The children, aged 6 to 14, were kidnapped in 2020 during an invasion by armed youth from Jonglei State. GPAA Information Minister Oleyo Akwer Nyalus confirmed the children are in good health and the necessary paperwork is being processed for their return.
The abductees are currently under the care of the GPAA Ministry of Gender Child and Social Welfare. This peaceful gesture of returning abducted children between Jonglei State and GPAA aims to reduce animosity and promote peace in the region. Child abduction, often linked with killings and cattle rustling, has been a longstanding issue in these communities.
This recent exchange of former abductees signifies a positive step towards reconciliation and peace-building efforts. It highlights the collaborative efforts of both regions in addressing longstanding grievances and promoting mutual respect. The safe return of these children is a beacon of hope for fostering peaceful coexistence between Jonglei State and GPAA.
