The rise of antisemitism and Islamophobia in France is alarming, fueled by the Israel-Hamas conflict and the spread of far-right ideas in public discourse, according to a report by France’s human rights commission, CNCDH. Acts of antisemitism and anti-Muslim incidents have surged by 284% and 29% respectively, with a 21% increase in other racist acts. This unprecedented trend is deeply concerning.

Increase in far-right ideas in public debate

The far-right National Rally (RN) is gaining popularity, advocating for stricter immigration laws that contradict the values of equality and freedom enshrined in the French constitution. Meanwhile, President Macron’s government has shifted towards conservative policies on security and immigration, further fueling xenophobic sentiments.

The report highlights a growing discomfort among the French population, with 51% feeling alienated in their own country. This rejection of immigration is particularly high among RN supporters, but most respondents do not support the notion of “national preference” for French citizens over foreigners in job opportunities and benefits.
