A recent report by the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute reveals a significant increase in the number of LGBTQ lawmakers across the United States, reaching a total of 1,303 elected officials as of May. This represents a 10 percent rise from the previous year and a nearly 200 percent increase since 2017. Despite these gains, there is still a representation gap, with only 0.25 percent of elected positions being held by LGBTQ individuals despite comprising around 7.6 percent of the population.
While progress has been made, efforts to close this gap are crucial. Elliot Imse, the executive director of the Victory Institute, emphasizes the need for a “moonshot effort” to achieve true representation. Annise Parker, president and CEO of the Institute, acknowledges the importance of this year for LGBTQ candidates and the ongoing work to be done.
The report also highlights the predominantly Democratic lean of LGBTQ lawmakers, with only 6.1 percent being Republicans. This aligns with recent attacks on LGBTQ rights by GOP figures like Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump, emphasizing the continued need for advocacy and support for LGBTQ representation in government.
Organizations like Equality PAC are actively working to increase LGBTQ representation in Congress, recognizing the ongoing threats to LGBTQ rights. Rep. Ritchie Torres warns against complacency, stressing the importance of safeguarding and advancing LGBTQ rights in the face of persisting challenges.
