On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi was appointed leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, a crucial position left vacant during Modi’s terms. Gandhi, signaling a challenge to Modi, shook hands with him and Speaker Om Birla before addressing the Lok Sabha.
Although Birla was re-elected by voice vote, the opposition’s decision not to force a division of votes was seen as a tactical retreat, not a defeat. Gandhi emphasized the importance of trust and the opposition’s voice being heard.
As opposition leader, Gandhi will be part of key committees, with responsibilities like appointing top law enforcement and human rights positions. Congress, with 99 seats, aims to hold the government accountable under Gandhi’s leadership.
During his first appearance in parliament, Gandhi wore traditional attire instead of his usual t-shirt. With a larger representation than before, Gandhi highlighted the importance of the opposition’s voice in the house.
