Former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane is facing persecution from state-owned institutions, which she attributes to false media reports of receiving money from the Gupta family. Mkhwebane shared videos on social media showing furniture being repossessed by the sheriff’s office, emphasizing her ongoing punishment due to these reports.
In 2019, the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project flagged Mkhwebane for financial links to the Guptas, citing a payment of over R92,000 in June 2014 from banking giant HSBC. Despite these allegations, she denies any connection to the controversial family.
Mkhwebane clarified in an interview with SABC that she received the money while working as a diplomat in China and denies the funds originating from the Guptas. The public protector is adamant about clearing her name and proving her innocence in the face of these accusations.
