The last parliamentary election held in September 2018 recorded a low turnout of 57%. Now, Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, has set a new date for the long-overdue parliamentary elections on October 20, 2024. The decision comes after multiple delays and intense disputes regarding the election date.
Despite acknowledging that not all political parties may be satisfied with the chosen date, spokesperson Dilshad Shahab emphasized the necessity of holding the elections for political stability in the region. The absence of a functioning legislature has undermined the autonomy and legitimacy of the Kurdistan Region, necessitating the need for the upcoming elections.
Disputes between the ruling parties KDP and PUK had led to delays, and a ruling by Iraq’s top court had terminated the quota seats for minorities. However, a recent decision to allocate five seats to minorities in Iraqi Kurdistan ensures their representation in the parliament. The Independent High Electoral Commission is ready to supervise the elections.
Despite initial concerns and a brief boycott by the KDP, preparations for the parliamentary elections are underway, aiming to bring political stability and representation to the Kurdistan Region.
