India probes Foxconn over claim of discrimination against married women at iPhone factory

India’s government is investigating allegations that Apple supplier Foxconn discriminated against married women at its iPhone plant in Tamil Nadu by excluding them from jobs due to family responsibilities. The Ministry of Labour sought a detailed report on the issue, citing violations of the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976.

Although Apple and Foxconn acknowledged past lapses in hiring practices, they refute current discrimination claims. Foxconn states that married women make up a significant portion of its recent hires and emphasizes its commitment to diversity and non-discrimination.

Foxconn, a major Apple supplier, faced criticism in the past for labor rights violations in China. The company’s operations in Tamil Nadu have been under scrutiny, with previous incidents of worker protests and poor living conditions. Apple’s response to the latest allegations is awaited.
