The European Union (EU) mission expressed strong support for Georgia’s desire to join the EU on the 10th anniversary of signing the association agreement. The EU emphasized that Georgia must stay committed to the path towards EU membership. However, EU Diplomacy Chief Josep Borrell warned that Georgia could be excluded from EU funding and supplies if it continues on its current trajectory.
The Georgian Parliament’s passing of the law on foreign influence sparked controversy and received backlash from the EU. The law requires NGOs to register as “organizations carrying out the interests of a foreign power” if they receive foreign funding. NGOs have protested this classification, claiming it is unjust. In response, the ruling party defended the law as a means to ensure financial transparency.
Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvili vetoed the law, reflecting the internal and external pressures surrounding the issue. The EU’s stance on the matter highlights the challenges Georgia faces in balancing its internal legislation with its aspirations for EU membership.
