The failed coup, led by General Juan José Zuniga, aimed to overthrow the Bolivian government but was thwarted, leading to Zuniga’s arrest. Johnson explains that the coup could be a response to Bolivia’s growing alliances with Russia and China, which Washington perceives as a threat.
“The fact that countries like Bolivia and Brazil are seen creating alliances with Russia and China is rejected by Washington, that’s seen as a problem,” Johnson notes.
