Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in prison by a New York court for his involvement in trafficking tons of cocaine into the United States. The sentence also included an $8 million fine, marking the end of a long and tumultuous legal battle. Despite prosecutors pushing for life imprisonment, Hernández’s age of 55 was a factor in the final decision.
Protestors gathered outside the Manhattan court, condemning Hernández’s past crimes and demanding justice. The accusations against him include facilitating the trafficking of around 500 tons of cocaine since 2004 and engaging in corruption and election fraud during his presidency from 2014 to 2022. It was revealed that he used drug money to fund his political campaigns, leading to his downfall.
Extradited to the US in 2022, Hernández is now another former Latin American leader to face consequences for illicit activities. Despite denying all charges and claiming they were part of a retaliation plot, he now faces a lifetime behind bars.
