In the ongoing battle against escalating insecurity in the West African region, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has put forth a bold proposal. With an annual budget of $2.67 billion, they aim to equip and operationalize a 5000-strong ECOWAS counter-terrorism force.
This crucial development was revealed by Nigerian Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, during the Defence and Finance Ministers’ meeting of the ECOWAS Member States in Abuja. The agenda included discussions on activating a regional anti-terrorism force and addressing governmental overthrows.
Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable resources, Abubakar emphasized the gravity of the security challenges facing the region. The goal is to craft a financing model that not only addresses immediate threats but also fosters long-term stability.
Furthermore, ECOWAS President Omar Alieu Touray highlighted the unprecedented shift in the global terrorism landscape, with sub-Saharan Africa now bearing the brunt. The meeting also aims to mobilize internal resources for a counter-terrorism force and tackle the evolving security threats collectively.
As the region grapples with escalating terrorism and violence, unity and determination are imperative to achieve a safer and more secure West Africa. The meeting sets the stage for a coordinated response to safeguard the future of the region.\
