The Dhaka University Teachers’ Association is escalating their protest by announcing a full-day work stoppage following three days of half-day suspensions. Their main demand is for the government to revoke the Prottoy Scheme, which implements a universal pension system.
The association’s President, Md Nizamul Hoque Bhuiyan, declared the upcoming full-day protest to be held on Sunday, exempting exams and emergency meetings. If their demands are not met, a comprehensive work abstention will begin on Jul 1, impacting classes and exams across all public universities in Bangladesh.
The teachers have been staging half-day work stoppages and sit-in protests to gain attention to their grievances, including the restoration of the previous pension system and fair pay scale for university professors.
The introduction of the Prottoy Scheme by the finance ministry is seen as discriminatory and creating economic and social disparities among employees. The association is determined to continue their protest until their demands are met.
