Six candidates are competing in Iran’s presidential election to succeed the late Ebrahim Raisi. Here’s a look at the diverse list:

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf

Ghalibaf, a prominent conservative, has served as parliament speaker and mayor of Tehran.

Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh-Hashemi

An ultraconservative medical doctor and supporter of Raisi’s government, Ghazizadeh-Hashemi secured 3.5% of the vote in the 2021 election.

Saeed Jalili

Jalili, an ultraconservative former nuclear negotiator, strongly opposed the 2015 nuclear deal and ran for president in 2013.

Massoud Pezeshkian

The oldest candidate and the sole reformist, Pezeshkian has criticized Raisi’s government for lacking transparency in response to protests.

Mostafa Pourmohammadi

The only cleric in the race, Pourmohammadi has held positions in Iran’s intelligence ministry and served as interior and justice minister.

Alireza Zakani

Zakani, an ultraconservative Tehran mayor and Iran-Iraq war veteran, was disqualified in previous elections and staunchly opposed the 2015 nuclear deal.
