Bolivian Police Arrest Former General Behind Failed Coup

Bolivian President Luis Arce has successfully asserted his authority over the military after the arrest of former general Juan Jose Zuniga, who orchestrated a failed coup attempt. The troops led by Zuniga raided the presidential palace in La Paz but were urged to withdraw within hours after facing international condemnation.

Arce thanked the public for their support and called on citizens to mobilize in defense of democracy. The president hailed the withdrawal of the rebel troops as a victory for Bolivia’s democracy, as citizens took to the streets in protest, waving flags and singing the national anthem.

Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo confirmed that the situation is now under control, labeling the incident as a “failed coup.” Justice Minister Ivan Lima rejected Zuniga’s claims of establishing democracy, vowing to seek a maximum sentence for attacking democracy and the Constitution.

Former President Evo Morales also condemned the military’s actions and called for criminal prosecution against Zuniga and his accomplices. Bolivia’s history of political unrest continues, with President Arce facing challenges from both the left and the right amidst economic turmoil.
