Alberta lithium firm E3 estimates $2.47B for proposed project

A company aiming to develop lithium from Alberta’s oilfield brines estimates the capital cost for its Clearwater project at $2.47 billion. E3 Lithium, with backing from Imperial Oil Ltd., completed a pre-feasibility study for a full-scale commercial facility to extract battery-grade lithium for electric vehicles. The pilot project near Olds, Alta., opened in fall last year.

The proposed project would produce 32,250 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year and plans to use carbon capture and storage technology to reduce emissions. The estimated cost does not include this equipment. The company’s goal is to provide a direct supply of lithium to battery producers and EV companies while ensuring environmental sustainability.
