At least seven civilians were killed and dozens injured in intense Israeli bombardment of the Shejaiya neighborhood in Gaza City on Thursday, according to the Civil Defense Agency. Spokesperson Mahmoud Basal reported that seven people were martyred and many more were wounded, with the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City overwhelmed.
Basal noted that civil defense teams were struggling to access the area due to ongoing bombardment, leaving bodies in the streets and homes. The situation was described as “difficult and painful” amid the shelling of populated areas.
In defiance of a UN Security Council resolution for a cease-fire, Israel continued its aggressive offensive on Gaza following an October 7 attack by Hamas. The toll on Palestinians has been devastating, with over 37,700 casualties, primarily women and children, and extensive destruction in Gaza.
The International Court of Justice has accused Israel of genocide and ordered a halt to military operations in Rafah, where over a million Palestinians fled seeking refuge. The ongoing conflict has left Gaza in ruins, facing shortages of essential supplies and humanitarian aid.
