Critics have blamed Sodol’s tactics of ordering counterattacks without sufficient support, leading to unnecessary casualties and failed operations. His replacement, Gen. Andriy Hnatov, symbolizes a shift towards younger, battlefield-tested commanders favored by President Zelensky.
The decision to remove Sodol may have stemmed from his inability to adapt to the evolving front line situations and connect with frontline troops. The public discontent, particularly from influential figures like Bohdan Krotevych, highlighted the disconnect between Sodol’s leadership style and the ground realities.
Zelensky’s strategic move to replace Sodol with a younger, more agile commander like Hnatov signifies a shift towards a new generation of military leaders in aligning with the aspirations of Ukraine’s volunteer movements.
