Failed coup attempt in Bolivia leads to 17 arrests
The Bolivian government announced the arrest of 17 individuals, including military personnel, in connection with an attempted coup against President Luis Arce. The group, led by retired General Juan Jose Zuniga Macias, attempted to force their way into the Presidential Palace in La Paz with a tank.
Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo confirmed that the conspirators face charges that could result in 15 to 30-year prison terms. The attempted coup has raised concerns of a political crisis in Bolivia, with tensions between the ruling party and former President Evo Morales causing instability.
President Arce, who took office following Morales’ ousting in 2019, has been accused by Zuniga of orchestrating a “self-coup” to boost his popularity. The incident has elicited condemnations from several Latin American countries, emphasizing the need for stability and democracy in Bolivia.
