RTÉ unions are reeling after the broadcaster announced plans to cut 400 jobs and shift the production of popular programmes like the Late Late Show and Fair City to an independent company. The new strategy, ‘A New Direction,’ has sparked concern among employees and union representatives.
SIPTU, representing 700 RTÉ workers, denounced the move as a step towards privatization. Industrial Organiser Martin Mannion criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the changes, particularly regarding working conditions for staff affected by the outsourcing of productions.
NUJ Irish Secretary Séamus Dooley also raised alarms about the future of RTÉ, warning against a transformation into a mere publisher akin to Channel 4. The proposed reforms, Dooley argued, failed to address the root causes of RTÉ’s financial struggles.
The potential job losses and production changes have left RTÉ staff uncertain about their future. As negotiations unfold, the unions are pushing for greater clarity and accountability from management to safeguard the broadcaster’s integrity.
