Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently held a trilateral meeting with his Romanian and Polish counterparts in Warsaw. The meeting aimed to discuss preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, addressing current security challenges in NATO’s vicinity and enhancing relations among the three countries. Fidan is expected to emphasize Ankara’s expectations for the summit, particularly regarding defense industry sanctions and contributions to counterterrorism efforts.
Additionally, the meeting will touch upon the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Israel’s attacks on Gaza. Fidan plans to address a joint letter proposing an EU-funded air defense shield, highlighting any implications and drawbacks. The trilateral consultation mechanism was established in 2012 by Romania, with the first foreign ministers’ meeting taking place in 2016.
Turkey hosted the latest trilateral meeting in 2022, reinforcing the importance of cooperation among the three countries in navigating international security challenges.
