A trial date has been set for Liberal senator Linda Reynolds and her former political staffer Brittany Higgins in their high-profile defamation battle. Reynolds, planning to retire from politics, is suing Higgins over damaging social media posts. Mediation failed, leading to a trial date being set for August 2, lasting four to five weeks with over 20 witnesses. Former PM Scott Morrison and other Liberal Party members could be called as witnesses. Despite the trial date, parties may pursue mediation for resolution.
Reynolds seeks justice over alleged defamation, emphasizing the toll on her health. She urges acceptance of findings in Bruce Lehrmann’s case. A settlement is still possible, with a call for Higgins to admit wrongdoing and apologize.
Justice Lee’s judgment in Lehrmann’s case was delivered in April. Lehrmann is appealing, while Sharaz, also sued by Reynolds, decided to settle. Sharaz must delete social media posts and damages will be determined post-Higgins’ trial.
