Japan’s food safety panel confirmed the harmful effects of PFAS chemicals on birthweight and immunity, though cancer risks remain uncertain. PFAS, known as “forever chemicals,” are highly persistent and commonly found in various products. The Commission advised an allowable daily intake limit for PFOS and PFOA, the most common forms of PFAS.
The government currently imposes a provisional cap on these chemicals in tap water and rivers, but may review this limit based on new assessments. Concerns about PFAS contamination have been raised near military bases and industrial areas in Japan.
In 2023, PFOA was classified as “carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organization’s cancer agency, while PFOS was deemed “possibly carcinogenic.” A recent study by the Environment Ministry found elevated PFAS levels in rivers and groundwater in several prefectures.
This health assessment marks an important step in understanding the risks associated with PFAS exposure and highlights the need for stricter regulations to protect public health.
