In a recent development, Muhammad Abdul Wahab Sukkar, the commander of the Iraqi Border Guard, highlighted the significant progress made in enhancing border security in the city of Sulaymaniyah. Over the past two years, efforts in line with a security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad have been implemented, as reported by official Iraqi media.

Sukkar emphasized that approximately 1,500 kilometers of the Iran-Iraq border fall within Erbil and Sulaymaniyah provinces of the Iraqi Kurdistan region. To strengthen border security, additional security forces have been deployed, and a dedicated brigade has been established with its headquarters in Halabja.

The commander mentioned the construction of 91 border outposts at the zero point of the border, with most of them already completed. Moreover, actions have been taken to push back elements of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), who have occupied certain areas since the 1980s.

As part of a security agreement signed in March 2023, Iran and Iraq have committed to ensuring border security by disarming terrorist groups and removing separatist threats from the Kurdistan region. These collaborative efforts aim to enhance peace and stability in the region.
