Iran and Saudi Arabia Work Towards Stronger Diplomatic Relations

Iranian Interim Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani recently met with Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji in Tehran to discuss enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 19th Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) ministerial meeting, emphasized the shared history and culture that can strengthen diplomatic ties.

Bagheri Kani highlighted the importance of removing obstacles in the way of progress, showcasing the determination of both nations to improve relations in various sectors. El-Khereiji echoed this sentiment, pointing out commonalities that can serve as incentives for deeper cooperation.

The meeting also saw appreciation from the Iranian side for Saudi efforts in facilitating the peaceful return of Iranian pilgrims and condolences from El-Khereiji for the recent loss of President Ebrahim Raisi. This significant diplomatic engagement comes after seven years of strained relations, with both countries agreeing to restore diplomatic ties in 2023.

In another significant development, acting Iranian President Mohammad Mokhber received a call from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman (MBS), expressing condolences for President Raisi’s passing. MBS emphasized the crucial roles Iran and Saudi Arabia play in the region and expressed the potential for a brighter future through improved relations.

President Mokhber recognized the importance of advancing ties with neighboring nations, seeing it as a strategic accomplishment of President Raisi. This exchange sets the stage for a new chapter in Iran-Saudi relations, offering hope for stability and cooperation in the region.
