Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant are facing potential arrest warrants from the International Court of Justice (ICC) on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu fears these warrants may be issued before his upcoming visit to Washington on July 24.
According to reports, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan requested these arrest warrants on May 20, leading Netanyahu to discuss this looming possibility with ministers and officials. The decisions of the ICC are binding, even though the US, Israel, and Palestine have various relationships with the court.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with thousands dead and injured, and many more displaced. The situation has garnered international attention and support for the ICC’s actions against alleged perpetrators of war crimes.
Netanyahu and Gallant have the option to appeal the arrest warrants, but the court’s decision is expected to be made public. The global community, including 123 signatories to the Rome Statute, is obligated to enforce these warrants.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports a devastating toll on civilian lives due to the Israeli aggression, with a significant number of women and children among the casualties.
