Opposition Grows Against Technopole Project in Greater Bay Area
Environmental groups in the Greater Bay Area are raising concerns over a proposed technology hub near Hong Kong’s border with mainland China. The San Tin Technopole project, spanning over 600 hectares, has faced backlash for potentially erasing a vital wetland buffer area. Jim Luk from the CrossBorder Environment Concern Association warned about the impact on migratory birds and the local ecosystem.
The project, part of the Northern Metropolis mega project, aims to attract tech companies but involves filling fish ponds and rezoning buffer lands. Critics argue that it contradicts national conservation principles and threatens the region’s largest wetland ecosystem. Despite opposition from over 1,200 individuals and groups, the government plans to expedite the town planning procedures.
While authorities assure that mitigation measures will protect ecological characteristics, concerns remain about the disregard for environmental conservation priorities. As the conflict intensifies, stakeholders await a decision from the Town Planning Board amid growing calls for sustainable development in the region.
